According to Dr. Ron Minson, the creator of iLs, here is something that does not require medication and addresses the lower subcortacle levels of brain functioning to improve input to areas of higher functioning through sound, movement, proprioseption, and visual stimulation. (Minson. 2010.)
What is it?
A Simultaneous Multi-sensory System
that helps brain function.
that helps brain function.
- Utilizes high quality headphones with a bone conductor (like a hearing aide) incorporated into the band across the top of the skull, to provide input to the part of the ear (and vestibular system) that provides input for our balance and coordination.
- Uses an iPod with an amplifier and holstered in a backpack.
- Music and auditory stimulus have been calibrated to precise frequencies in order to provide the desired outcome.
- Incorporates movement along with the listening experience in order to challenge and the brain and neuronet.
- This is a flexible, portable, child driven program that can be incorporated into a child's IEP. (Minson. 2010.)
- Follows Hebb's Law that identifies, Neurons that fire together wire together!
- Addresses Autonomic Nervous System - stuck in fight or flight response - students can become calm and regain focus, reduce cortisol levels, and reengage the ability to learn. (Minson. 2010.)
Who can this help?
Individuals at any age: Attention Difficulties, ADHD, Dyslexia, Reading and Learning Disabilities, Articulation Disorders, Traumatic Brain Injury, Autism, Auditory Processing Disorders, Sensory Processing Difficulties - Motor Processing Problems, Down Syndrome, etc. (Minson. 2010.)
Yes the earlier intervention the better, but there is constant growth at many levels which are all part of the neoplasticity phenomenon. This program aims to benefit those at any age and any stage of development who are struggling. When subcortical structures are not processing information correctly, traditional modes of instruction and intervention which are working with the cortical surface level are not effective. Therefore, addressing the subcortical structures and where the difficulties are can improve the processing of information.
